Drawing on nearly two decades of client experience and her clinical background, Susie offers insight into anxiety, visual overwhelm, decision fatigue, and the invisible mental load that can make organizing feel inaccessible. Her approach reframes organizing as a supportive, compassionate process designed to reduce stress and help individuals create environments that truly support their well-being.

Have you ever walked into your home and immediately felt tense, distracted, or overwhelmed—even when nothing specific was wrong? It may be the piles of clutter scattered about your home causing the underlying feeling.

Many people describe cluttered spaces as feeling “mentally loud” or heavy. That description is surprisingly accurate from what many of my clients have shared with me over the almost 19 years I have been a professional organizer. I have seen the effects clutter has had on individuals from as young as 5 years old to 95 years old.

Clutter doesn’t just affect how a home looks. It affects how our brain functions, our energy levels, and our emotional well-being. Let’s look at why this happens—and how supportive organizing can help create more calm in everyday life.

Why Clutter Can Make a Space Feel “Mentally Loud”
When we are in a space, our brains are constantly processing visual information. Every item in view sends a signal. Instead of allowing rest, the environment keeps our mind in a subconscious and conscious state of alertness.

This mental overload can lead to

Increased stress and anxiety

Difficulty relaxing at home

Trouble focusing

Feeling mentally exhausted before the day begins

Feeling overwhelmed

A cluttered space becomes mental clutter, not just physical clutter. I’ve had clients share with me that having all of the “To-Do’s” around them constantly makes them feel guilty and pressured to “work on the house” even though they don’t seem to make any progress. They don’t feel like they deserve to relax or have fun when they have a mess around them. Some clients have also shared that they tend to churn items (move items from one space to another) and make more chaos. This causes a sense of failure and more of a tendency to procrastinate any more attempts.

How Too Many Choices Drain Energy and Focus
It might seem like having more options would make life easier—but the opposite is often true.

Every item requires a decision

What should I wear?

Which container do I use?

Where do I start?

Should I keep this?

Do I need this?

Mental health professionals call this decision fatigue. The more choices we face, the faster our mental energy drains. I explain to clients that limiting the number of choices they have in a day (a challenge for many people in the world we live in) will in the end help to boost their energy and focus. I will give a client a concrete example such as, “Instead of 10 types of coffee to choose from in the pantry, let’s reduce that down to your 3 favorite types. And each morning be sure to give yourself some time to enjoy and celebrate that cup of coffee! You deserve it!”

When spaces contain too much clutter

Decisions take longer

Motivation decreases

Procrastination increases

Every day tasks feel heavier

Reducing excess isn’t about deprivation. It’s about freeing your brain from constant decision-making.

What Organizing Looks Like for an Anxious or Overwhelmed Mind
Organizing isn’t about perfection or magazine-worthy spaces. While I do love a beautifully organized pantry, there is more to it than that. It’s about being mindful and conscious about how a space functions and what the items in that space mean to the person. Supportive organizing focuses on how a space feels to live in.

When someone feels anxious or overwhelmed, organizing should

Reduce visual stress rather than add complicated organizing systems

Make everyday items easy to find and easy to put away; think functionality

Match real habits and energy levels

Create predictability and routine

Prioritize calm over appearance

Progress over perfection.

The goal is not perfection but rather a home that supports your nervous system.

Simple Ways to Reduce Visual Noise and Feel Lighter Every Day
Small changes often create the biggest emotional relief.

Try starting here

Clear one flat surface. Clutter-free counters and tables immediately impact how a space feels.

Keep only daily-use items visible. Less visual clutter/stimuli equals more mental calm.

Create simple drop zones. A basket or tray near the areas of transitions (entryways, action hubs, etc.) prevents clutter from spreading.

Use containers and boundaries. Bins can visually quiet groups of items. instead of overwhelming overhauls.

Cluttered spaces do more than look chaotic. They can keep the body in a steady state of low-grade stress.

Decluttering can have the opposite effect by acting as a physiological reset, similar to the “micro-resets” described by Ashley Sewall, PhD.

These brief, manageable actions help calm the nervous system without adding more overwhelm.

Micro-resets help interrupt the stress loop, reduce cognitive load, restore a sense of control, and give the nervous system a quick signal of completion. While micro-resets are intentionally small and not overwhelming, their impact is often outsized relative to the effort.

When the environment is contributing to a chronic stress signal, even small visible changes can meaningfully reduce that input. Without that explanation, some readers might assume the actions are too small to matter if the problem feels big or systemic.
Understanding the biology behind this helps explain why organization is more than aesthetics—it is regulation.

The Stress Response: Cortisol and the HPA Axis
The body has an elegant alarm system designed for survival. When the brain perceives stress, it activates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to the release of cortisol.

In the short term, cortisol

Raises heart rate and blood pressure

Increases blood glucose for quick energy

Temporarily suppresses digestion and immune activity

This response is adaptive in true danger. But when stress signals remain chronically activated, elevated cortisol has been associated with fatigue, sleep disturbance, impaired concentration, and inflammation.

Research suggests that environments described as cluttered may be associated with altered cortisol patterns, particularly in women who perceive their homes as chaotic rather than restorative (Saxbe & Repetti, 2009). In other words, how we experience our environment may influence how our stress system behaves throughout the day.

Clutter may not be a threat in the traditional sense, but visually overloaded environments can reinforce a sense of unfinished tasks and ongoing demand.

Clutter and Cognitive Load
Beyond stress hormones, clutter affects executive function.

The brain’s prefrontal cortex has limited attentional bandwidth. Every visible object competes for processing. Studies in cognitive science show that visual clutter increases attentional demand and reduces task efficiency. When the environment constantly signals “unfinished business,” working memory becomes taxed.

Over time, this cognitive load can contribute to:

Decision fatigue

Difficulty initiating tasks

Reduced sustained attention

For individuals with anxiety, ADHD, depression, or trauma histories, environmental overstimulation may have an amplified impact on nervous system regulation.

The Nervous System: Stuck in “On” Mode
When the sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” system) remains activated, the parasympathetic system—the body’s “rest and digest” mode—has difficulty engaging.

Organized environments may help reduce this background activation. Fewer visual cues can mean fewer stress signals competing for attention. While organization alone is not a treatment for mental health disorders, it can reduce environmental stress inputs that contribute to physiologic arousal.

Professional organizers often observe that clients report feeling “lighter” or “grounded” after sessions. From a physiological standpoint, this aligns with reduced cognitive load and improved perceived control—both important components of stress regulation.

Environment and Sleep
Cortisol follows a natural daily rhythm: highest in the morning and gradually declining toward evening. Persistent stress can disrupt this pattern and interfere with sleep onset and quality.

Sleep health experts emphasize that our environment plays a meaningful role in sleep regulation, including minimizing stimulation in the bedroom and creating cues for safety and rest. A clutter‑free sleep space may support the body’s natural evening wind‑down process and improve sleep latency and continuity (American Neuropsychiatric Association & National Sleep Foundation, 2025).

Even small environmental resets before bed may reinforce the brain’s signal that the day is complete.

Decluttering as a Body‑Friendly Wellness Tool
Organization is not about perfection. It is about reducing unnecessary stress inputs.
Research in environmental mental health consistently demonstrates that surrounding conditions influence psychological and physiological well-being (Nature Medicine, 2023). While most studies focus on urban design, noise, and green space, the principle extends inward: The spaces we inhabit shape our stress responses.

Professional organizing can therefore be reframed as a supportive health behavior—one that helps lower background stress load and promote regulation.

Small, consistent actions are often more sustainable than large overhauls. That is where micro‑resets become powerful.

Micro–Reset Starters
Counter Reset (60 seconds)
Clear one visible surface. Notice whether your breathing slows once visual input decreases.
Inbox Triage (5 minutes)
Sort papers into three simple categories: act, file, discard. Reducing ambiguity reduces cognitive load.
Nightly Close
Reset your sleep area before bed. This supports the brain’s transition from task mode to rest mode.
Light Shift
In the morning, open blinds soon after waking to anchor your circadian rhythm and support alertness. In the evening, dim lights and shift to warm or red tones. Longer wavelengths (amber/red) suppress melatonin far less than blue or cool white light. Lower brightness matters as much as color—think bright days, dim warm nights. Consider a smart bulb for your bedside lamp so you can easily shift to a dim red setting about an hour before bed.

The Bigger Picture
Mental health is shaped by biology, psychology, relationships, and environment. While decluttering is not therapy, it can support nervous system regulation by reducing persistent environmental stress cues.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, it is worth recognizing that productivity experts and professional organizers are not simply creating efficient schedules or tidying homes; they are helping clients build environments that support focus, rest, and resilience.
Calm spaces create calm bodies. Calm bodies create clear minds.

Additional Resources
Brain-Based Conditions Specialist Certificate
Organizing the Invisible: Women, ADHD, and Emotional Labor
How Executive Function or ADHD Challenges Manifest in the Workplace (and How YOU Can Help)
Household Management Specialist Certificate
I Guess I Should Do It: Help Clients Deal with Ambiguity & Ambivalence
Overcoming Overwhelm, Learn to Reflect, Refresh and Refocus

References
Saxbe, D. Organizing, on the other hand, feels like it belongs in a different category entirely, something personal, domestic, and focused on your home.

But the truth is, organizing is one of the most practical, everyday ways we can care for the planet. Because the way we manage our spaces directly impacts the way we consume, waste, and live.

Organizing is Sustainability in Action
Earth Day is about being mindful of our footprint. Organizing is about being mindful of what we already have. When your home is cluttered, it’s easy to lose track of your belongings. Items get buried in drawers, forgotten in closets, and replaced unnecessarily.

How many times have you bought

another phone charger because you couldn’t find the one you own

extra pantry staples because they were hiding in the back

a duplicate sweater because you forgot you already had three

Clutter leads to overconsumption. Organizing helps break that cycle. When everything has a home, you can actually see what you own, use what you have, and buy less.

Decluttering Doesn’t Mean Throwing Everything Away
One of the biggest misconceptions about organizing is that it’s just getting rid of things. But true organizing is about intentionality, not disposal. Earth Day reminds us that the planet doesn’t benefit from us simply moving our excess from our homes into landfills.

A sustainable organizing process asks these eco-conscious questions:

Can this be donated?

Can this be recycled properly?

Can someone else use this?

Can this item be repaired or repurposed?

Organizing with the Earth in mind means being responsible with what leaves your space.

A Well-Organized Home Reduces Waste
When your kitchen is organized, food doesn’t go bad in the back of the fridge. When your storage is functional, you don’t forget about supplies you already have. When your closet is streamlined, you stop impulse shopping for items that don’t actually serve you. Organization helps you waste less, naturally. It supports a lifestyle where you use what you own, maintain what you have, and make thoughtful choices moving forward.

Earth Day Starts at HomeI
It’s easy to think environmentalism has to be grand or complicated. But Earth Day isn’t only about big policy changes or major lifestyle shifts. Sometimes, it’s about small, consistent decisions. Organizing is one of those decisions.

Because when you create systems that work, you

reduce unnecessary purchases

keep items in use longer

donate instead of discard

feel less overwhelmed and more intentional

That ripple effect matters.

Mindful Spaces Create Mindful Living
Clutter often creates stress, decision fatigue, and a sense of disconnection from our homes. Organizing brings us back into awareness.

It encourages us to reflect:

What do I truly need?

What do I value?

What do I want to care for?

Those same questions are at the heart of Earth Day. A calmer, more organized home supports a calmer, more conscious life, one that’s less driven by excess and more rooted in purpose.

Organizing Is an Everyday Earth Day Practice
Earth Day may be once a year, but organizing (or disorganization/clutter) is something we live with daily. Every time you choose to repair instead of replace, donate instead of toss, or use what you already own, you are making an environmentally friendly choice.

Organizing isn’t just about pretty bins or tidy shelves. It’s about creating space for what matters, reducing what doesn’t, and living with more care for both your home and the planet.

This Earth Day, consider organizing as a form of sustainability. Because taking care of your space is also a way of taking care of the Earth. For seniors in particular, an organized home environment can mean the difference between daily frustration and a lifestyle that fosters comfort, independence, and peace of mind.

As a company that specializes in senior relocation, our team at WellRive has come to deeply appreciate how much our surroundings shape the way we feel—especially during times of change. As seniors navigate shifts in health, mobility, and/or lifestyle, the home can become either a source of comfort or a barrier. Our work in senior move management has shown us that even small changes—like rethinking how a space is used or letting go of what’s no longer needed—can have an incredibly meaningful impact. Having support during this process, whether from a professional service or a trusted friend or family member, can make it feel less overwhelming and more manageable.

Here’s a closer look at how thoughtful organization can enhance emotional, physical, social, and even financial health—and how a little support can go a long way.

Emotional Well-Being: Reducing Stress and Shifting Mindset
Cluttered spaces don’t just impact how a home looks—they affect how we feel. Studies show that clutter can raise cortisol levels, the body’s main stress hormone, which contributes to anxiety, irritability, and fatigue. On the other hand, a clean and organized space helps promote calm, control, and a positive outlook.
Organizing isn’t just about clearing out—it’s about clearing space for something: peace, creativity, connection, energy, and a greater appreciation for what truly matters. When your surroundings are purposeful and inviting, it sets the tone for a more joyful life.

Physical Health: A Safer and Healthier Lifestyle
For older adults, organization isn't just convenient—it’s critical for safety. Cluttered walkways, loose cords, or overstuffed closets can increase the risk of falls. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are a leading cause of serious injury in seniors. Organizing the home to improve accessibility—like placing frequently used items within reach and removing trip hazards—can make a significant difference.
One of our clients, Sharon, experienced this firsthand. After undergoing shoulder surgery, she found everyday tasks like reaching high shelves or bending down to retrieve items had become painful and risky. We began by decluttering scattered piles around Sharon’s home and relocating essential items to more accessible places. These thoughtful adjustments not only reduced strain on Sharon’s healing shoulder but also supported a smoother recovery overall.

Sharon’s experience is just one example of how small, strategic changes can lead to big improvements in comfort, safety, and mobility. And beyond recovery, organization plays a role in everyday health. A well-arranged kitchen, for instance, makes fresh foods easier to access and encourages healthier eating habits. Likewise, a tidy, clutter-free bedroom can support more restful sleep and lower daily stress—both essential for maintaining energy and overall wellness.

Social and Financial Well-Being: Creating Stability and Connection
A cluttered or chaotic space can make people feel embarrassed or hesitant to invite others in—leading to social withdrawal and isolation. But a tidy, welcoming home encourages connection. Whether it’s tea with a neighbor, a visit from grandchildren, or simply feeling comfortable in your space, an organized environment helps keep relationships strong.
In our work with seniors, we often see how the emotional and financial benefits of organization are closely linked. For example, one of our clients, Evelyn, a retired teacher, was feeling overwhelmed by stacks of paperwork scattered in drawers and bags throughout her home. She reached out to us for support, and together we created a simple filing system and monthly checklist. Within weeks, Evelyn felt confident managing her finances again—and more importantly, she felt empowered.

With her budget clear and expenses under control, Evelyn planned a trip to visit her granddaughter out of state—something she’d always wanted to do but had hesitated to commit to. That’s the power of organization: It gives people the clarity and confidence to say “yes” to the things that bring joy.

Mental Clarity and Productivity: A Mind at Ease
There’s something deeply refreshing about a space that feels calm, open, and intentional. For older adults, this sense of order can boost mental clarity, reduce decision fatigue, and help maintain independence.

Clutter contributes to distraction, confusion, and even memory challenges. But with a place for everything, daily tasks become more manageable, decisions come with less effort, and a sense of calm begins to take over. Even small changes—like labeled bins or keeping daily essentials within reach—can improve focus, reduce frustration, and support a more peaceful day-to-day routine.

When mental clutter fades, there's more room for joy—reading, painting, puzzles, or simply relaxing without the weight of “stuff” hovering over them.

Tips for Achieving an Organized Life
Creating a more organized lifestyle doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Begin the process with these basic, achievable steps:

Start small. Focus on one area (e.g., kitchen counter or nightstand) and clear it completely.
