Organizing by Learning/Sensory Preferences
and Action Style Preferences

Learning and utilizing strong, effective organizational skills  is not a one-size-fits-all.  Most people  use a combination of styles with one learning/sensory style usually preferred and strongest.

What is your
learning/sensory style preference?  How do you usually perceive, organize and recall information?  Are you a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner?

Visual Learners:  "Let me see"
Language:  "I see what you mean."      "Can you tell me what that would look like?"      "I see that in my mind's eye."
  • process information through their eyes
  • recall what was read or observed
  • make up 65% of the population
  • useful tools:  written communications, notes, guided imagery, color-coding information, graphs, bulletin boards, charts, diagrams, photographs, tables, maps, checklists, Illustrations, acronyms, pictures, emails, rubrics, demonstrations, videos, flash cards, highlighting, underlining, writing things down and reviewing notes

Auditory Learners:  "Let me hear"
Language:  "That sounds great!"      "I hear you".      "That's music to my ears."
  • process information through their ears
  • recall what was heard
  • make up about 30% of the population
  • useful tools:  class lectures, audio tapes, telephones, voicemail, oral instructions, rhythmic sounds, tape recorders, poems, rhymes, word associations, alarms, group discussions, explanations and spoken word, singing, timers with sounds, lectures, quiet place to study or background noise to study; limiting distracting noises or music to set the mood,  studying by reading class notes and reciting information out loud, teaching others

Kinesthetic Learners: "Let me do hands-on"
Language:  "Let's attack this problem."     "Let's talk through the next step".      "Let me back up and look at it from this angle."
  • process information by doing (touch/skin; taste/mouth; smell/nose)
  • recall what was done
  • make up about 10% of the population
  • useful tools:   hands on activities for learning, exploring, working; movement and frequent breaks, stress ball or toy while working; underlining and highlighting; writing information down to learn, plays, role playing and acting out concepts, games, constructing models, making lists, move around to learn, rocking chairs, writing notes, gum chewing, squishy grips and desk toys, problem solving, props and physical examples

What is your action style preference?  Are you a sprinter or a jogger?
(Source:  Wilma Fellman)

Sprinters
  • tend to do most of the work in one long session
  • then ignore the project for days or weeks
  • and finally complete it right before the deadline

Joggers
  • do a little bit each day until the project is complete
  • will often finish well before the due date

and your preferred learning/sensory style and action style to accomplish your organizing goals!
