Energize and Organize:   Food Safety and Power Outages

3/19/2018

Picture
Here in the Northeast spring is within sight and alas,  so is the next big winter storm! High winds and heavy, wet snow often bring power outages of various duration and a great many concerns about refrigerator and freezer food safety.  Here are a few tips for you to remember...

Tip #1
Prior to a storm ...

Step 1:  Place a cup of water in your freezer.
Step 2:  Once it’s frozen solid, put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer.
After a power outage storm ...

Step 3:  When power is restored check to see if the quarter is where you left it or if it has fallen to the bottom of the cup.
Step 4:  If  the quarter is still at the top of the cup your food is safe to eat. If the quarter has moved,  it's a signal that the frozen water has thawed and likely so has your frozen food so  it's best to toss everything.

Tip #2
Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature.
The refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened.
A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.

Tip #3
Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C).
The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C).   Check temperatures periodically using a fridge/freezer thermometer.

Tip #4
Visit the following websites for specific food safety recommendations.
  1. https://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/refridg_food.html
  2. www.stilltasty.com/articles/view/27

Tip #5
When in doubt, best to throw the food out!

It's National Napping Day!  Time to celebrate and well, take a nap!

Did you know there are three categories of naps
(planned, emergency and/or habitual) and many different kinds of naps?
Here are a few ...

Power Nap
10 -20 minutes
energy boost
will not leave you feeling drowsy
will allow you to fall asleep with ease

Hangover Nap
30 minutes
energy boost but might leave you longing for more sleep time

Brainaic Nap
60 minutes
deepest sleep
improvement and increased ability to recall facts, names, faces
best before big test and/or round of studying

California King Nap
60-90 minutes
