High winds and heavy, wet snow often bring power outages of various duration and a great many concerns about refrigerator and freezer food safety. Here are a few tips for you to remember...
Tip #1 Prior to a storm ... Step 1: Place a cup of water in your freezer. Step 2: Once it’s frozen solid, put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer. After a power outage storm ... Step 3: When power is restored check to see if the quarter is where you left it or if it has fallen to the bottom of the cup. Step 4: If the quarter is still at the top of the cup your food is safe to eat. If the quarter has moved, it's a signal that the frozen water has thawed and likely so has your frozen food so it's best to toss everything. Tip #2 Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Tip #3 Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically using a fridge/freezer thermometer. Tip #4 Visit the following websites for specific food safety recommendations. Tip #5 When in doubt, best to throw the food out! Remember if you need assistance and support with your family life, home and/or office, you are cordially invited to contact ...
