Our neighbor Barbara has friends who are moving from a large Victorian home with lush gardens to a smaller, modern and contemporary condo. After 30 years in one place, they have MANY items to donate, keep, trash and sell.
That got me to thinking about interesting sites for buying and selling home furnishings and more. Here are a few of many Internet resources that might be of interest to you and your loved ones. Donna LaRoche, M.Ed., Professional Organizer Serving Cape Cod, MetroWest and Eastern Massachusetts Contact: 617.640.2366 www.energizeandorganize.com Do you work hard all week, take time out to grocery shop, purchase lots of produce and other food items with the very best of intentions and then throw much of it away within a week or so because it went bad? Is your shopping cart often filled to capacity with fruits, veggies, dairy products, breads, meats and more? Is your refrigerator packed and yet food often goes to waste in your home? Does this sound familiar? You are definitely not alone!
The Natural Resources Defense Council reports, "In the U.S., 40 percent of all food goes uneaten each year, at a cost of $162 billion annually. Consumers are responsible for 40 percent of this waste—more than any other part of the supply chain. It’s a problem that costs the average family of four roughly $1,500 per year." Get your shopping organized by writing a list and/or using a grocery shopping app. If possible, shop for specific , meal-planning groceries more frequently than doing a massive purchase. Don't forget that frozen fruits and veggies keep a lot longer than fresh and have nearly the same nutritional value! For a step-by-step Illustrative guide, visit www.wikihow.com/clean-a-clothes-dryer-vent.
That got me to thinking about additional laundry room tips to recommend to you. 1. Clean the lint from the dryer trap every time you dry clothes! 2. From time to time, vacuum the lint that has fallen behind and around your washer/dryer. 3. Check behind your washer/dryer for lost items and retrieve them with a yardstick. 4. Observe if your washer's drainage tube is in the right position and make any adjustments as needed. A plumber recently told us that our washing machine drainage tube needed to be repositioned to maximize drainage functionality. Here's how ... 1. Wet your sponge(s) - dishes, counters, floors 2. Microwave the sponge(s) on high for two minutes. 3. It/they will be hot so let the sponge(s) cool before removing it/them from the microwave. Note: Your dishwasher is another good source for removing bacteria from your sponges. Did you know that you can save lots of time scrubbing the inside of your microwave simply by heating a cup of water for three or four minutes? The steam will loosen food particles built up on the interior walls and a quick wipe with a cloth or paper towel will make the task complete! Supplies to organize include bowls, candles, cups, cutlery (plastic or an inexpensive set of flatware), napkins, plates (disposable or melamine), tablecloth(es), toothpicks (for finger foods) and trash bags for recycling and/or trash.
