Energize and Organize: Create Closet Clarity

"Where do we begin?" is a first, frequently asked clothing closet question from clients.  Have you ever asked yourself the same question about the closet(s) in your home, too?  Let's get started ...

1.  What do you actually wear?  

• ​Remember, we wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time.  
• Put the other way, you don't wear 80% of the clothing in your closet for any number of reasons (wrong size, out of style, just don't like it anymore ...).  
• Your unworn clothing is taking up a LOT of space in your closet.  
• Time to sort it out, give thanks for the service it has given you ("This winter coat kept me so warm")  and then pass it along to someone who would benefit from your generosity.  

2. Group like with like!

• Group your clothing by type.  Put all of your belts, dresses, jackets, pants, shirts, skirts, sweaters, suits and tops in groups.  
• Then, organize the clothing groups by color, light to dark.
• Treat yourself to matching hangars in your closet.  They create an instant decluttering effect and are very pleasing to the eye!

3. Seasonal and Infrequently Worn Clothing

• Think about where you would like to store clothing that is out of season and/or rarely worn.  
• Are those items taking up "prime real estate" in your closet?  If so, perhaps you want to store those clothes in another space?

4.  Closet Layout Considerations

• ​Have you measured the dimensions of your closet?  If not, get out your tape measure, paper and pencil and start measuring.  
• If your closet ceiling height is at least 7 1/2 feet, you have room to add another clothing rod  to "expand" your closet!  Separate the upper and lower clothing rods three or four feet from one another.  Remember that the lower clothing rod needs to be at least 42 inches above the floor so your clothing does not drag on the floor.
• Be sure to position the new clothing rod a foot away from the back wall to allow for your clothing to be hung up on your new, matching hangers.
•  You just "expanded" your closet for your newly organized wardrobe!  Enjoy and well done!
